Hi Niche Superstars! I hope you’re all doing well. I’d like to give you a reminder today about one of your YouTube video dashboard features that can really add a lot of value to your videos. I’m talking about the “annotations” feature.

If you’ll start to use the YouTube annotations feature on your videos it’ll make your videos a lot more enjoyable and useful to your viewers and raise your status in their eyes as somebody who really knows how to make great videos.

The word ‘annotation’ means, “……a note that is made while reading any form of text.” You’ve surely made annotations yourself…….on books you read, on notebooks in school, on notes that somebody left you, or maybe even on a packing box.

Point is, when you’ve just made a video and put it up on YouTube you’ve basically given it your best shot as far as the content of the video itself. You can’t go back into the video itself and change something anything you said or the way you moved or anything that was actually captured within the video as your camera captured it.

But there is a way you can add more information ‘on top’ of it.

The way you do that is with the YouTube annotation feature. I won’t go into the mechanics of it here because that’s not the point. But I do want to make sure you understand how much extra value good annotations can make on your YouTube videos.

Let’s just say for example you’re in the real estate business…and you make a video of the front yard of a house. As you might know, some plants and flowers bloom at different times of the year. So what if one of the prettiest flowers in the garden isn’t blooming at the time you make your video? That might be important to a prospective buyer, right?

That’s a perfect opportunity to use YouTube video annotations. You can add your annotations ‘on’ your video at any point. That means that as your video pans across the front yard, you should add an annotation that pops up and reminds the viewer that ‘here’s where the New Cambrian Roses are that bloom every Spring!”

Or another use might be to create suspense. Let’s say you’re shooting a video of your puppy playing in the back yard. You could add an annotation that says, “Guess who’s coming into the picture now?” And then perhaps the neighbor cat attacks the puppy.

Point is, annotations on YouTube videos give you a ‘second chance’ to add informational value ‘on top of’ what’s already in the video visually. I know from experience as an actor in movies that viewers usually miss a lot of what’s going on in the camera frame. Part of the art of being a good director is knowing how to ‘steer’ the viewer’s eye toward what you want them to see.

So I really want to suggest you try your hand at adding some annotations to one of your next videos. Annotations are also a good way to add extra content without having to use your voice. There’s nothing wrong with practicing ‘voice overs’ (that’s what we call them in Hollywood) but sometimes your voice might distract from the focus of the video and an annotation would be more effective.
