I talk a lot about YouTube and online video marketing and the value of having a YouTube Channel like my son’s James and Tylers GoPotatoTV but a friend asked me a very important question the other day that I thought I’d answer specifically here.

My friend said, “Thom….why should I bother with setting up a YouTubeChannel? Can’t I get all the same benefits by just having my YouTube account?”

I realized it was a good question because I’d never specifically answered that question in YouTube Domination. The answer might surprise you.

Actually there isn’t a tremendous difference at all….objectively. But there is a big difference subjectively…..i.e. In terms of ‘branding’.

With a YouTube Channel, you can add a custom background. The net effect of this is to give your ‘information’ an instantaneous, visual identity that people pick up on immediately.

If you’re just throwing silly videos up on the net for entertainment purposes then having a ‘brand’ might not be to valuable to you. But if you’re trying to build a brand to promote a product or service, then the unique coherent image of your YouTube channel can help…over time.

There are some more advantages (or perhaps I should say ‘differences’) of a YouTube Channel vs. a simple YouTube video (or group of videos).

For one….you get more space for a profile. You can put more information in there. If you’re a company….you might like this.

For another……if you comment on other people’s videos from within your YouTube channel (remembering that you can include other people’s videos within your own channel) you get a link on their video back to your channel. There again…..more ‘corporate’ identity.

For another…..it makes your content look more important and voluminous that it really is within the large body of YouTube videos. Just the fact that you’ve assembled all your videos in one place is going to give your more credibility in the mind of the viewer.

In summary, having a YouTube Channel is part of the evolution from an ‘individual’ video provider to something more ‘corporate’. That’s not to say that you’ve giving up any of your entrepreneurial independence by setting up a channel………because you’re not. It’s just that having a YouTube Channel just makes you seem more credible.

For example, it’s doubtful that my sons, James and Tyler, would have gotten the attention they did as fast as they got it if they had not had a YouTube Channel and, later, been YouTube Partners (NB: being a YouTube Partner does have some substantial benefits)

I still think everybody who wants to promote a product, service or cause by video should have a YouTube Channel. It makes it much easier to keep your videos organized and monitor their views.
