One of the easiest and most fun ways to learn how to make good videos is to practice, practice and practice.  And the best way to practice putting videos on the internet is with a blog and YouTube.

There are several different ways to get your blog started but lots of people start with a free blog at someplace like blogger.com.  They get their practice with it and then later graduate to something more appropriate for SEO (search engine optimization) such as a WordPress blog.

Of all the free blogging platforms Blogger.com is the most well known and unquestionably the best.  And Blogger also integrates great with YouTube too.  Of course, that’s no wonder because they’re both owned by Google, right?

Aside from the fact that blogs are a lot of fun for individuals every business should absolutely have a blog.  A blog with lots of videos is generally called a ‘vlog’ (i.e. “video blog”).

Adding content to a ‘blog’ implies that most of the content is written whereas a blog where the primary emphasis is on video content is referred to as a ‘vlog’.   In actuality the distinction is getting blurred nowadays because most people are trying to use as much video content as possible.

But the point is that vlogs are the best place to practice and improve your online video production skills.  If your vlog is purely personal then your content will probably revolve around you, your daily activities and your interests.  On the other hand, if your vlog is oriented towards strengthening your business position then your subject matter will lean more toward your business products and/or services.

In the free reports that my sons, James and Tyler, and I made and give away for free, we talk about different kinds of videos you can put on a vlog.  For a business, one of the logical choices would be a ‘how to’ video.  How-to videos are also the easiest ways for you to become more camera-comfortable because (if you know your product) you’re probably more comfortable talking about something you’re very familiar with.

It’s possible, of course, that you might not have a product that lends itself easily to ‘how to’ videos…but another easy avenue to take is to give your viewers ‘news’ about whatever it is you do.  Obviously they’re interested or they wouldn’t be on your site anyway.

The advantage you have in talking about something you’re familiar with is that you’re ‘inner critic’ can’t come down on you too much because your conscious and sub-conscious mind both know that you are an expert on that subject.

Contending with your inner critic is the single biggest problem that people have in getting good at making videos.  It’s a double problem because you’re battling your conscious camera shyness and also your sub-conscious camera shyness.

The best way to get ‘around’ that inner critic is to be so engrossed in the subject you’re talking about that your passion and enthusiasm for it overpowers your nervousness.  How to do that and many other techniques that help you be more effective ‘on camera’ is the subject of my recently released course, NicheCeleb.

YouTube is the second most used search engine today.  It’s no longer just something used for amusement.  People actually look for information on YouTube on a wide variety of subjects…..things like how to flirt, how to train a puppy, how to throw a frisbee, how to till a garden and much more.  If you’re in any of those niches (or anything similar) you can benefit greatly by having your videos on the first page of YouTube for that subject.
