As we head into the month of July I was just thinking about all that July means to America. I was thinking about how so many things have changed. Not just the way we communicate but also the way we record history and voice our dissent.

Video, YouTube, smart phones and FaceBook have made it alarmingly easy to record social disturbances. Take virtually any social unrest that’s been in the news, here in the US or abroad, over the last few years and it’s amazing to see the video coverage of it captured on somebody’s cell phone video or pocket video camera and now appearing on YouTube.

Back in the days of colonial America everything was hand written at best and word of it traveled primarily by word-of-mouth.

Of course I cannot in any way agree that violent civil disobedience is the appropriate remedy to problems. I only wish that some of the talent that went into making videos of some of these disturbances could be refocused into more positive channels.

If we see the social upheaval that some analysts (such as Gerald Celente) predict, there will certainly be a lot of ‘local news’ to go around. But I wonder what our country’s original patriots and freedom fighters would have thought about things like inexpensive video cameras, smart phones that take great pictures and videos and video sharing sites like YouTube.

What would Paul Revere, Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton have done if they had such tools. No doubt we’d know a lot more about that period of history than we do.

Can you imagine videos of Bunker Hill, Concord, or George Washington crossing the Delaware river to surprise the Hessians at Trenton?

We tend to think more in terms of selling stuff nowadays when we think of online video and video marketing but it’s good to remember that there’s a lot of other ways to use video in business. You can use online videos even if you run a local store or you’re a school teacher or even if you’re in politics.

We always have to make the best of who and where we are right? I always say “be balanced, be observant and be present”. So here we are smack dab in the middle of 2011 and this is both the worst of times and the best of times. We see gangs of teenagers rampaging through a Walgreen drug store in Chicago yet there’s still lots of opportunity around too.

Father’s Day a couple of weeks ago was a good time to appreciate our dads and the role they play in making America a great country (even in spite of present troubles). I hope some of you got your copy of YouTubeDomination over at NicheCeleb and used some of the video tips and tricks you learned to capture some memories with dear ‘ol dad.

Wouldn’t this month be an appropriate time to make some videos of the many blessings that we have as Americans? Even though America is relatively young as countries go, we’ve still got history and beauty everywhere across our great land.

Why not take your video camera and capture some of your local history? Don’t worry about being ‘professional’. Being professional is over-rated anyway. Just worry about getting some great content. And above all just relax and be as ‘real’ as you can.

If you make a video that you think is especially good, I’d love to have a copy of it. I might even put it on the blog here. And I’ll even do better than that. I’ll pick the best 3 videos I get, up until July 4^th, and they’ll all get an autographed picture of me.
