Guys and Dolls Performance Night

With both men and women performing this past wed night the top 13 were in fine form to get into the illustrious top 10 voting tonight. This week the theme was the American idols performing their favorite songs from their very own personal heroes and idols.
With the pressure on to pay tribute to their heroes, the stakes only grew higher with some audience members of high profile record producers such as Rock mafia and Don Was. Its true the top 13 were here to impress and had a real chance at the spotlight and future success with a good performance on Wed night.
Getting to some of the Idol favorites:
Lauren the flirt was back again with a Shania Twain song, which went over fairly lackluster. If anything she sounded like she was doing a bad cover or singing karaoke. She really did not make the song her own at all. Even Steven Tyler usually the nicest judge for criticism said she needed work on the song. It will be interesting to see if she makes it through to the final 10
The fifteen year old sensation Thia, did a cover of Michael Jackson’s smile this week. The talent that this young contestant has shown can only further her very young career. With some mistakes made in this Wednesday’s performance but all of the judges still giving her the nod. Thia is sure to be a fan favorite into the top ten.
With Paul Mcdonald’s success as a music star, (having a song on American charts with his band already.) Its no surprise that his performance went over well this week too covering a Ryan Adams song. Each week Mcdonald has shown the judges and America a cool Nashville swagger and kept the performances and the shows very exciting. I look forward to seeing what he will bring to the table in the top 10.
As for some of the disappointing performances of the night:
Karen Rodriquez did a number very close to Jlo’s heart, from the artist whom she played in the film Selena. With a song that hit so close to home though, I think it left Jlo wanting a little more. Her and the judges all seemed to think the performance could have gone a lot better and for the most part was not the best effort. Karen’s Idol dreams may be done for this season and it may be partially because of the strategy she chose when picking a song.
Hailey Reinhart was spot on vocally but her stage presence was very downplayed when she covered LeAnn Rhymes “Blue”. Everything was pitch perfect but there was no real performance element to the whole thing. Hopefully America will focus on her voice and not her somewhat simple stage presence this week. Being the American Idol is about performance and voice so she really has to keep this in mind.
